Sketches are disposable, fast to make, and great for brainstorming ideas or sharing initial thoughts within a team.
A set of wireframes goes deeper by detailing all copy, buttons, and calls-to-action. This captures the actual text and structure for each screen, helping teams refine flows, see where information or elements might be missing, and even run lightweight user tests. Wireframes also serve as living documentation for how each piece should function.
An interactive prototype goes one step further by letting users click and explore. This can be particularly useful for complex or high-risk features where you need to uncover confusion early, without building the entire system. By making the prototype feel realistic, you learn whether people can accomplish tasks or are thrown off by the design.
A visual design adds polish: fonts, colours, images, and styles that give the product its final aesthetic. This step usually comes after the major flows are settled. Doing it too early can distract from critical usability fixes and risks locking you into a look that’s expensive to change if the flow itself is flawed.
Deciding which artefact to produce depends on the complexity of the feature and the team’s needs. Simple bug fixes might only need a quick sketch. Major reworks may call for a set of wireframes or a fully interactive prototype. Always ask whether the artifact will save time later by catching mistakes up front.
Screens vs. paper is another crucial consideration. Paper sketches are good for team brainstorming or certain special cases (like testing visuals side by side, or for quick mobile layouts), but pure paper prototypes can mislead actual users. People interact with physical paper differently than on-screen UIs, so an interactive mock-up usually yields more accurate feedback.
- Even with interactive prototypes, keep details minimal until you validate essential flows. Over-polishing too soon leads to reluctance in discarding flawed designs. And if you wow participants visually, they may hesitate to criticise underlying usability problems, which is the real feedback you need at this stage.
Consistency in every design artefact helps your team avoid mixed signals. If you show engineers a flow diagram that conflicts with your wireframes, people get confused or build the wrong thing. Keep these deliverables updated only as long as they remain useful. Once a feature is live, outdated diagrams or sketches lose their value.
Chapter 9: An MVP is Both M & V
Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) are both brilliant and flawed. The idea is to release a product that includes only what’s absolutely necessary, then refine it based on real user feedback.
Unsurprisingly, trying to shave a product down to its core is really, really freaking hard. It is perhaps the hardest thing that you will have to do.
Teams often struggle to agree on what’s truly indispensable.
An MVP isn’t a bad product or a half-baked idea; it’s the smallest solution that still solves a meaningful part of the user’s problem. Many overbuild at first, spending months on features no one uses. MVPs solve this by letting you learn quickly, pivot if needed, and avoid sinking time into dead ends.
One of the leanest MVP techniques is the landing page. You describe a hypothetical product or feature, drive traffic to it, and measure who’s intrigued enough to click or sign up. This “promise of a product” is minimal yet can validate whether real demand exists before you invest in heavy development.
After the landing page, move to a first iteration of something tangible. Resist the urge to stack on every possible feature. Focus on delivering exactly what your initial landing page promised to those interested users. Anything else introduces complexity without proof that people actually want it.
If your MVP gets a positive response, you’re still not done. People will often clamour for additional features. Before you build them, find out why they want them. Understanding the real motivation behind each request prevents you from coding superfluous extras or misreading user needs.
If your first iteration is met with indifference, talk to those who tried (or ignored) it. Ask them what they expected, how the product fell short, and why they dropped off. Actual conversations yield deeper insights than surveys or anonymous feedback forms.
As you learn, you iterate again. Lean MVPs aren’t a one-off project; it’s an ongoing cycle of “start small, learn, add more.” Even large products can be composed of multiple MVP-style releases for each major feature, ensuring that every addition solves a real user pain.
An MVP should be limited but never crappy. A limited product does a small set of things really well, even if it doesn’t handle every edge case. A crappy product simply does everything poorly, leaving you unsure whether the concept is flawed or the execution just sucks.
Think of how Amazon began by selling only books online, or how early social apps solved narrow problems first. By keeping the scope small and doing one thing thoroughly, you learn what matters to people without the risk of shipping an unwieldy mess.
Chapter 10: The Right Amount of Visual Design
Interaction design focuses on how a product works, while visual design is about how it looks. A solid user experience depends on both, but they serve different purposes: one addresses structure and flow, the other form and aesthetics.
Visual design remains important because it can enhance how information is presented, reinforce desired user actions and set the tone.
One reason to delay visual design is that it’s usually faster to iterate on wireframes first. Polished screens take longer to update, so waiting until the interaction details are nailed down saves rework and avoids overshadowing early usability feedback with cosmetic concerns.
How much visual design you need depends on your market and product. An enterprise app solving a unique problem may not need the same level of polish as a high-end retail site competing for style-conscious consumers. Each project’s ROI for detailed design will differ.
Even so, good visuals can complement usability. For instance, grouping a product’s cost, description, and “Buy” button together improves conversions more than a lovely but fragmented layout. Form still follows function, especially when aiming for maximum clarity.
The smartest approach is to set up design standards: colour palettes, typography rules, layout grids… so new screens can be built quickly. This prevents inconsistent patchwork, keeps everything flexible for pivots, and makes you less likely to lose time on pixel-perfect features that might change soon.
Instead of polishing everything, focus on these basics:
- A reusable color palette
- Font standards for headers and body text
- A simple icon or UI element set
- A flexible header/footer design
- Consistent spacing and layout rules
Remember that your preferences may not match those of your audience.

User Experience Design doesn't end when you ship your product.
Chapter 11: Measure it!
The goal of A/B testing is to see whether a specific change in your product or site actually boosts the metrics that matter to your business. By dividing users between two versions of a feature or screen, you compare the results directly. This helps you decide if a new design choice leads to more sales, higher engagement, or other tangible improvements.
Why measure design?
The single best reason for measuring design is to understand if what you are doing is making a difference, positive or negative, to your company.
Unless you track real-world outcomes like user behaviour and bottom-line results you’ll never know if a design change is genuinely helping or simply wasting resources.
Reasons for not A/B testing (mostly flawed):
- It kills good design: Testing doesn’t replace designers; it just verifies if changes help.
- It’s only for minor tweaks: A/B tests can compare anything from small button changes to brand-new features.
- It leads to local maxima: If you only test tiny variations, you might miss big ideas. You can still test larger redesigns.
- It creates messy interfaces: Uncoordinated, incremental tests can clutter the UI, but that’s more a process problem than a flaw in A/B testing.
- Design isn’t about metrics: Design serves a purpose; metrics reveal if that purpose is achieved.
When to A/B test and when to research: A/B testing is best for understanding whether a proposed solution drives the key numbers you care about like revenue or conversions. It’s less helpful at uncovering why users act a certain way. Qualitative testing fills that gap by revealing which parts of a new design cause confusion or excitement, so you can refine ideas before you code and measure them at scale.
What A/B testing does well:
- Gives statistical evidence on real users’ actions.
- Validates (or disproves) design decisions with hard data.
- Identifies which features or layouts have a measurable impact.
- Lets you compare versions in production without needing interviews.
What it does badly:
- Does not explain why users behave a certain way.
- Tends to require large sample sizes and careful experiment design.
- Can lead to local maxima if you only test small variations.
- Doesn’t solve all design questions, especially when you have major new flows.
Which metrics equal happy users? The truth is, no single metric perfectly measures user satisfaction, but a combination helps:
- Retention
- Revenue
- Net Promoter Score (NPS)
- Conversion to paying
- Engagement
- Lazy registration
- Customer service contacts
Statistical significance matters. You must have enough data so that a difference isn’t just random chance. Without significance, you could base decisions on misleading results. Also, keep an eye on short vs. long term effects—a short spike in conversions might vanish if users feel tricked, so track changes over time.
Forgetting the goal of metrics is a common mistake. Some teams fixate on raising a specific stat—like repeat visits—while ignoring that it doesn’t actually drive revenue or user happiness. Another oversight is combining data from multiple tests without re-checking the final outcome, leading to contradictory or absurd results (e.g., an unreadable colour scheme because two separate tests each favoured “red” in different contexts).
Understanding the significance of changes requires you to link outcomes back to real causes and confirm your interpretation with both quantitative and qualitative evidence. By carefully designing experiments, paying attention to actual user behaviour, and staying aligned with business goals, you can ensure your measurements drive better products and happier customers.
Chapter 12: Go Faster!
Traditionally, teams used a waterfall approach: product managers spec’d everything, then designers made it look good, then engineers coded it. It’s slow and inflexible. The alternative is a lean cross-functional team that unites product, design, and engineering from the start, letting them iterate faster on user feedback.
In a lean environment, a group of engineers, a product owner, and a designer collaborate on a single goal (e.g., onboarding). They brainstorm features, observe user tests together, build incrementally, and adjust quickly as metrics come in. This eliminates wasteful handoffs and keeps everyone focused on solving the same problem.
On small teams, a single person can handle both product and UX responsibilities. This reduces overhead, streamlines decisions, and ensures user insights feed directly into product decisions. It’s especially helpful when resources are limited and priorities must shift on short notice.
Engineers are costly and often in short supply. Whenever you can, validate ideas with low-tech options first. You might run a fake preorder via a blog post and PayPal button before coding a complex new feature. If it flops, you’ve saved time and money by discovering that early.
Small, rapid releases let you learn faster. But if you’re afraid of alienating all your users with an unproven change, you can roll out new features in limited ways. Watch key metrics and feedback, then iterate without risking your entire user base.
- The opt in: Users enable features themselves. Tests with enthusiasts reveal early feedback and potential ambassadors.
- The opt out: Release to all but let users revert. Low reversion rates indicate success.
- The n% rollout: Release to a small percentage first. Monitor metrics and expand or retract based on results.
- The new user rollout: Give features only to new users to test adoption without disrupting existing users.
A lean team moves quickly by testing ideas before coding, launching incremental updates to only some users, and constantly monitoring metrics. By breaking away from waterfall, combining roles, and shipping to a slice of your audience first, you reduce risk and continuously refine your product in response to real user behaviour.
Chapter 13: The Big Finish

- User research: Listen to your users. All the time. I mean it.
- Validation: When you make assumptions or create hypotheses, test them before spending lots of time building products around them.
- Design: Iterate. Iterate. Iterate.
