Dependencies in a software project can contribute to unsatisfactory progress if they constrain or block the flow of work… this paper develops an initial taxonomy of agile software project dependencies.

This paper finds three categories of dependency: task, resource and knowledge dependencies and within those various types of dependency. It also does a great job at explaining the previous work done in this space.
